What to Expect
What to Expect at Your Oral Surgery Appointment
Knowing what to expect before, during, and after your procedure helps reduce anxiety and supports a smooth recovery. The following oral surgery patient information covers the most common questions and steps.
Before Your Appointment — Pre-Op Instructions
Please follow any instructions provided at the time of scheduling. Typical oral surgery pre-op instructions include:
Fasting: If you will receive IV sedation or general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your appointment.
Medications: Continue your regular medications unless directed otherwise. Bring a list of everything you take.
Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves (for IV access) and avoid jewelry or contact lenses.
Plan ahead: Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home if sedation is planned.
These details will be confirmed during your pre-surgery phone call.
What to Bring on the Day of Surgery
Arrive with the following:
Your health insurance card and a photo ID
A list of current medications and dosages
Any co-payment or insurance card information (we will discuss payment options beforehand)
A phone charger or book in case of wait time (though we strive to stay on schedule)
A support person who will remain in the office during your procedure
After Your Procedure — Recovery Basics
Your recovery plan depends on the type of surgery and sedation used. General guidelines include:
Rest: Plan to take it easy for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours.
Ice: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off to reduce swelling.
Eating: Stick to soft, cool foods (yogurt, applesauce, smoothies) and avoid hot, crunchy, or spicy items.
Pain management: Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers exactly as instructed. Do not drive after taking narcotic pain medication.
Follow-up: Attend any scheduled check-up appointments. If you have concerns, call our office.
